General Information
Mexico is currently seeking to strengthen its existing water legislation. The Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT, as abbreviated in Spanish) is developing and publishing an Official Mexican Norm (NOM, as abbreviated in Spanish) in relation to the Official Mexican Norm NOM-001-SEMARNAT-2021, that establishes the allowed contents of pollutants in wastewater discharges in the water bodies under national ownership. The norm will impact positively the cenotes (sinkholes), which are water bodies characteristic of karstic zones and that represent an important environmental, landscape and touristic value, especially for the State of Quintana Roo.
Furthermore, it is important to guarantee the sustainability of pollution control and ecosystem recovery actions through mechanisms such as payment for environmental services, which will contribute to granting the necessary resources for the necessary investments, as well as their operation and maintenance.
