Suriname

 General Information

Suriname currently has a National Development Policy 2017-2021 and it is discussing a strategic vision for IWRM. These instruments will be strengthened with support from the GEF CreW+ project, through the development of a diagnosis and framework for wastewater and sludge management actions based on priorities emerging from Suriname‘s main urban and peri-urban area of Paramaribo.  The analysis will characterize the main pollution problems, identify stakeholders and potential coordination structures, and analyze the financial governance of wastewater treatment solutions.  This will provide the basis for the later development of a national policy and strategy as well as quality standards.

One of the main aims of the country is to protect the Suriname river from pollution through proper wastewater and sludge management systems. The river mouth is host to endangered and protected species like turtles and dolphins; the area is often used by tourists for leisure and nature-oriented trips. The river is also often used for open water swimming marathons and by large vessels going to the main Paramaribo Harbour, Staatsolie Refinery or the many other businesses that make use of water transportation. The UNESCO World Heritage City Center is also along the riverside.
